Gardening for Kids Packaging

Gardening for Kids makes grow-your-own kits for children and beginner gardeners. Their packaging needed more personality and shelf presence. The warmth was there, but it wasn’t punching hard enough for retail.

The first brief was a Christmas tree kit, and it came with a genuine creative question: evolution or revolution? The existing packaging had its own character, and the decision of how far to move from it was the most important one we made. We went for a significant change in direction, and have been playing that out across the full range ever since.

That first pack set the visual tone for everything that followed. Bold, characterful illustration with enough personality to stand out on shelf while still feeling inviting to kids and parents. From there the range grew: the core Grow Your Own packs, then the Grow Something Different kits featuring more unusual varieties, each with its own illustrated character.

The range now runs to 33 single pot packs, including Herby Heads, microgreens that grow like hair, which are exactly as much fun to illustrate as they sound. Two multi-pot kits round out the range, along with four tags for bagged products.

Several products from the range have been shortlisted for Gift of the Year, which is the kind of thing that confirms the packaging is doing its job.

Working on a retail range over multiple years is a different discipline from a single project. Consistency matters, but so does keeping things fresh as the range expands. Every new pack has to feel like it belongs while still bringing something of its own.

Let’s work together.
If you’ve got a project that needs clear, human-centred design, illustration, branding or a combo of all three, I’d love to work with you.
